'Moonfall', the sci-fi epic directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Halle Berry, will be released on February 4, 2022, the distributor Lionsgate announced on Wednesday (May 26th). Read more details about the big-budget independent movie below:

Roland Emmerich’s ‘Moonfall’ Finally Lands A Release Date

Lionsgate said Wednesday that Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi pic Moonfall will be released on February 4. Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu, Eme Ikwuakor, Carolina Bartczak and Donald Sutherland star in the big-canvas film, which at a reported budget of $140 million is the biggest-budget “independent” movie to shoot in years.

Lionsgate acquired North American rights in late 2019 after a high-profile sales launch at Cannes; Centropolis, AGC and CAA sold out on the project worldwide. Production was just getting underway in Canada when Covid hit, causing months of delays. The shoot eventually began in October in Montreal.

In Moonfall, a mysterious force knocks the moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Wilson), and conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (Bradley) believe her. The unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space only to find out that our moon is not what we think it is.

Emmerich directed and penned the script with Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen. Emmerich and Kloser are producers.

With the scope of the pic from Emmerich — who was behind such epic-sized titles as Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, The Patriot and Midway — financing was critical. Partners along with North American distributor Lionsgate include Chinese outfit Huayi as main financier, AGC Studios and its international distribution partners, CAA Media Finance, East West Bank as agent, MUFG Union Bank and SPG3 Entertainment.

Moonfall becomes the first big movie to stake out the early-February date next year. Right now it is bookended the week before by Columbia’s Morbius and two weeks later by Sony’s Uncharted.

Halle Berry Touches Down In Montreal For 'Moonfall'

Halle Berry arrived in Montreal earlier this week, where she is scheduled to begin production on 'Moonfall' with director Roland Emmerich later this month.

Per government rules for travellers entering Canada, the actress is currently in quarantine ahead of filming and it was announced that Stanley Tucci and John Bradley will join her, Patrick Wilson and Charlie Plummer in the space epic. Read more details below:

Tucci will play Tom Phillips, a wealthy car dealer, who’s married to Brian Harper’s (Wilson) ex-wife, while Bradley is KC Houseman, an eccentric and unkempt genius who discovers that the moon has fallen out of its orbit. Josh Gad was originally cast in the role of KC Houseman but exited the project due to a scheduling conflict.

Emmerich, who co-wrote the script with Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen, is financing and producing the pic via his Centropolis Entertainment banner. Kloser is also producing through his company, Street Entertainment. Executive producers are Dennis Wang, James Wang, J.P. Pettinato, Marco Shepherd, Ute Emmerich, Carsten Lorenz, and Stuart Ford.

Halle Berry Heads To Space In Roland Emmerich’s 'Moonfall'

Halle Berry has signed on as the female lead in 'Moonfall', the Roland Emmerich-helmed sci-fi epic, which already counts Josh Gad (pictured with Berry above) amongst its cast and has been acquired by Lionsgate for release in 2021. Read more details below:

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: Halle Berry will star in Moonfall, the latest sci-fi disaster picture from Roland Emmerich.

Berry joins Josh Gad, who was first to sign up, in the thriller that Emmerich, who made destroying Earthly landmarks his signature with movies such as Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, co-wrote and is directing.

Production is eying a fall start with Lionsgate, which released Emmerich’s last movie, World War II pic Midway, distributing in North America.

Penned by Emmerich and 2012 co-writer Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen, Moonfall sees its plot go into action when the moon is knocked from its orbit by a mysterious force and is on a collision course with Earth. Life as we know it hangs in the balance and with just weeks to go before impact, a ragtag team is sent on a seemingly impossible mission to land on the lunar surface and save humanity.

Gad is playing an eccentric genius that deduces that the moon has fallen out of its orbit. Berry will play an astronaut-turned-NASA administrator whose previous mission holds a clue to the catastrophe.

Emmerich is producing Moonfall under his Centropolis banner with Kloser producing through his company, Street Entertainment.

As he did with Midway, Emmerich and Centropolis are independently producing and financing Moonfall, overseeing all aspects of production, financing and delivery. They are also collaborating with Lionsgate and AGC International, which sold out the film worldwide in Cannes 2019, as well as with international distributors on marketing and distribution.

Lionsgate is eyeing a North American release in 2021.

Getting Berry for an outing is a big deal as the Oscar-winning actress has made few big-screen appearances in recent years. Her last outing saw her team up with Keanu Reeves to shoot, stab and maim in 2019’s John Wick 3: Parabellum. Before that, she appeared in 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle. She also recently wrapped her directorial debut, Bruised, in which she also stars as a female MMA fighter. Berry is repped by WME and Management 360.
